Confirmation of Payee (CoP) is a name verification service for bank account payment instruments. It checks whether the account owner name you provide matches the name registered against the recipient's BSB and account number at their financial institution, before you send funds.
This guide covers:
- Key Benefits: Why CoP matters
- How CoP Works: The verification flow specific to CoP

Key Benefits
- Fraud Prevention: Confirm account ownership before disbursing funds, catching misdirected payments before they happen
- Reduced Errors: Identify typos and incorrect account details before a payment is sent
- Customer Confidence: Give assurance that funds are reaching the right recipient
- Compliance: Retain a verifiable record of each name check result, supporting dispute resolution and demonstrating due diligence before sending funds
How CoP Works
CoP uses the bank account details you provide to query the NPP network, comparing the account owner name against the name registered at the recipient's financial institution. The result is either a match, a close match, or no match — each indicating whether to proceed with the payment or review the account details.
The check runs asynchronously and you are notified when it completes. For a full description of the verification flow, see the Getting Started with CoP guide.
